What is Invisalign?
Clear aligner therapy consists of a series of removable clear mouth trays, or aligners, that apply a controlled amount of force to your teeth to allow them to shift. Invisalign is one of the world’s market leaders in clear aligner therapy. It was first introduced in the USA in 1999 and has since expanded globally, entering Singapore in the early 2000s. In Invisalign treatment, the process begins with orthodontic records taken and sent overseas to Invisalign’s specialised laboratory. A computer-generated animation of how your teeth will look like at each stage of treatment, right till the end, is generated. If you and your dentist approve of this, Invisalign will then design and send a series of custom-made aligners to Singapore. Each aligner is typically worn for a period of 2 weeks before you move on to a different aligner. Each aligner moves the teeth progressively.
A great smile can improve your self-esteem and sometimes even improve your oral health. For those who want straight teeth but are reluctant to go through traditional metal or ceramic braces, you can now choose clear aligner therapy.
Advantages of Invisalign
The advantage of clear aligners compared to traditional braces is that these are almost undetectable when worn. The aligners consist of smooth, comfortable plastic which are less likely to irritate your cheeks and gums. The aligners are removable so you can brush, floss and eat as usual. This means you can eat whatever food you usually enjoy. Brushing and flossing is much easier compared to traditional braces. Patients who choose Invisalign have to be dedicated to wearing the aligner for at least 22 hours a day. Invisalign requires fewer visits to the dentist, usually once every 6 weeks. Once your treatment is complete, you will wear a clear retainer to ensure your teeth stay in position.
Who can undergo Invisalign treatment?
Clear aligners can be used for teeth movements that are not too complicated. Certain complex cases may require traditional braces to achieve ideal results. It is best to make an appointment to see if you can be treated by clear aligners. You can learn more about Invisalign here.
